10 Point Guard Ball Handling Drills!

The success of any basketball team, greatly depends on the point guard's ability to run the offense while facing intense, defensive pressure. That is why the point guard is normally known as the team's best ball handler. To become the best ball handler on court, takes dedication and practice.

Here are 10 simple, yet effective ball handling drills used by both NBA and top NCAA Basketball superstars to help you improve your ball handling skills. These drills improve ball control and boost the confidence one needs when playing against a good basketball defense. By applying these drills to your weekly training, you can improve their dribbling skills and help your team win more games.

10 Point Guard Ball Handling Drills!

- Around The World: Standing with one ball in both hands, begin circling it around the waist, legs and head. Bend and separate the legs, circle the ball around each leg. This drill helps to obtain a better "feel" for the ball while exercising hand coordination with speed.

- Double Ball Walk Drill: Standing at one end of the court with a ball in hand, walk to the other end of the basketball court by dribbling one ball first and then the other. Make sure to maintain good timing where as the ball from the left hand hits the floor, the ball from the right hand is released. As you improve this skill, you can go faster or alternate the pace.

- Circle Drop: Circle the ball from the outside of one leg to the outside of the other. When it reaches the back, between your legs, let it drop and switch hands and continue circling the body. Once the ball arrives in front, between the legs, reverse directions and repeat the process for the other side.

- Two on One: Advance the ball against two imaginary defenders to practice various ball maneuvers. This drill is more effective than one might think. It is a good practice technique and can help prepare any player for the time when two defenders are actually there.

- The Scissors Drill: Standing in a staggered stance, with one right foot ahead of the other, dribble the basketball between the legs, "passing" the ball from hand to hand. As it goes from hand to hand, switch the position of your legs. In other words, with the right leg forward, after the ball passes through the legs and into the other hand, quickly jump in the air and alter the positions of your legs.

- Triple Catch Drill: Holding the basketball between the legs with both hands (with one arm in front and the other from the back from behind the legs) Quickly switch hands without letting the ball fall. This drill helps to develop speed of hand movement while improving the delicate catching form that great ballers need.

- The Walking Crab Drill: Walking from one end of the court to the other, constantly pass the ball between the legs to the other hand. Combine this motion with periodic reverse steps without losing the ball control.

- Figure 8 Dribble Drill: Spread the legs apart and dribble the basketball in a figure eight form, around and through the legs while looking forward. Increase the speed as time progresses. This is a great drill I perform daily with my players. I find it to be one of the best ball handling drills known.

- Catch and Pass: Bounce pass the basketball with both hands through the legs from front to back. Then catch it with both hands behind the body and pass it back to the front. Keep the ball transition going for a specific amount of time of for a specific amount of uninterrupted catches.

- The Banana Squeeze: Squeeze your fingers and thumb together while switching ball control from one hand to the other. This drill helps to improve finger strength as well as coordination.

These drills may be difficult at first. But, with constant practice, they can be mastered and you will surely be on your way to becoming an excellent ball handler.
