Girls Lacrosse Transition Drill

What makes a lacrosse team into a real team is learning how to pass to each other quickly and effectively. The flow of the ball needs to change direction often in order to make the defense reset with each pass. This pass does not always have to be down field, it can be back or across. With this in mind, I started doing this drill with my teams and it really helps them pick up the speed and effectiveness of their passing.

The field can be any size. The objective is to get the ball to the other end of the field and either shoot, or pass over the end line. You can do it with a goal at each end, with or without a goalie. Or, you can have a point be scored just by passing the ball over the end line.

Transition Coaching

Divide the players into 2 even teams, and get one team pinned-up. Have them mark up to play man to man. Have them spread out end to end, with 1 player from each team in the middle to do a draw.

Girls Lacrosse Transition Drill

Once they start, and a player has the ball in her stick, she can only hold it for 3 seconds before she passes. I scream out "1 one-thousand, 2 one-thousand, 3 one-thousand!" If she has not passed off within 3 seconds, she and her entire team have to do 10 push-ups*. AND the other team gets the ball.

Keep score. They work harder if they are competing. At the end, the winning team does a set of 5 sprints and stops. The losing team does a set of 8 sprints. The distance of the sprints depends on their age.

*You could substitute in 10 walking lunges, 25 crunches, 20 bicycle abs, or 10 squat jumps after each team as done a few sets of the push-ups (so they don't get sore/hurt).

What Makes Me Happy? My 10 Habits

What makes you happy? We are responsible for our own happiness so I want to insure that I do whatever is necessary to keep me happy and healthy. People are often focused on their goals. Instead these are habits I love to do and want to make sure I make time for them in my busy schedule. Writing them down helps me keep them in the top of my mind. For the most part they are activities I've been doing in previous years and I know they do a lot for my well being. What activities make you happy? I encourage you to make your own Happy Habit List!

1. 2 weeks of vacation time - This is something I instituted 3 years ago when I noticed that some years went by with no real vacation. I try to find something early in the year to put on my calendar for July. Sometimes I split the vacation time so there is some left for later in the year. Knowing it is on my calendar in January gives me something to look forward to.

Transition Coaching

2. Meditation time each day - This is a practice I am developing with the help of a coach friend. I love doing it but get so involved in my work taking time for this is often challenging. I've set up a special quiet place in my home to do this that is inviting and restful. It helps having a coach remind me too.

What Makes Me Happy? My 10 Habits

3. Exercise 3 times a week - Ok I said these are habits I love to do but not this one. I just love the way I feel after I am done! Amazingly even though I don't love it I am very good about doing this regularly.

4. Read at least one book a month that is non work related - I have a book club that keeps me honest on this one. I've been doing this for about 5 years now and have read a variety of books both fiction and non fiction. This month was the autobiography of Sidney Poitier and last month In the Heart of the Sea, a book about the whaling ship, Essex, that sank in the 1800s.

5. One concert or play each month - Since I love music this one isn't difficult either. During the month of December I went to two different Christmas Concerts. I love religious music of all types. (I sing in a Gospel Choir) December is a really good month for hearing this kind of music.

6. One totally free day each month with no agenda - Not so long ago Massachusetts had blue laws that kept all stores closed on Sunday. That meant Sunday was a really quiet day. I love the peace and quiet of having nothing scheduled. You probably can tell I am a planner so not planning is hard for me but when I do it I love it.

7. Have pedicure, facial or massage at least 6 times during the year. Another way to relax is to get away from it all for an hour or so. I enjoy it when I do it but unless I put it on my calendar I forget about it.

8. Try something I've never done - I try to do something new every year. Last year I went to the opera in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the year before I sang a solo at a workshop in Italy and another year I learned Yoga. This year who knows maybe I'll take up painting, do an improv class, or try ball room dancing.

9. More flowers in the house - I love gardening and in the summer bring lots of flowers into the house. This winter I picked up some winter evergreens to spread throughout my home but there is nothing like a beautiful flower to lift my spirits. In December I bought a beautiful rose for my kitchen table and today I bought a lovely flowering primrose plant that sits on my kitchen window.

10. Grandchildren Time - Nothing is more fun for me than spending time with my grandchildren. Last year I took my granddaughter to her first ballet. It was special performance of Cinderella for young children. She loved it and I loved watching her enjoy it. The same day I took my grandson out for an ice cream cone and scooter ride (He rode it not me). He likes his ice cream in a dish and eats it very slowly (to make it last!). Lots of time for a nice chat and very special! Seeing the world through a child's eyes is wonderful in the true sense of the word. (full of wonder)

How to Encourage Better Staff Relationships

Positively stimulating interpersonal relationships inside an Organization can often lead to an increase in productivity, a warm working atmosphere that can expand with a happier workforce.

1. Keep everyone Informed

Transition Coaching

A simple notice board, company newsletter or for large Organizations a Magazine keeps everyone informed on upcoming events, changes within an organization and helps everyone feel part of a team.

How to Encourage Better Staff Relationships

2. Canteens

Larger Organizations usually have a canteen whilst small scale organizations should have a refreshment area, with a microwave and a place were employees can relax, and mix together.

3. Resource Centers

Access to resources are as important as the job itself, resource centers could be a simple computer that could be accessed by all employees or in much larger organizations a library or center.

4. Social or Activity Clubs

Encouraging Social or Activity Clubs inside an Organization can often encourage employees to socialize with each other in a positive environment. In an economic recession, this could help employees substitute vacations with more localized activities.

5. Celebrations

Birthdays, Festivals like Christmas, Idul Fitri or other religious holidays could be celebrated after work. This often shows a company does care, and helps motivate Employees.

6. Counseling Services

These are particularly important in times of economic change, when a company may have to cut working hours or even lay-off staff. Counseling could help employees affected by this change to accept in a positive way, an unwelcome change.

7. Quality Circles

Allowing members of your Organization to discuss in the open issues around work in an informal setting, often brings positive results, and can sometimes solve issues before they become too serious.

Encouraging Interpersonal relations inside an Organization creates a more positive, and open environment many employees should feel comfortable in. During economically hard times, this could be the difference between a smooth transition, and a rough volatile transition.

Team Building and Development in a Matrix Environment

What is a team?

There are many kinds of teams. A functional team is a permanent team established to conduct operational activities for a particular part of the organization, such as finance, sales, marketing, etc. There is no specified time limit on functional teams as they are needed to keep the business running. A project team is brought together for a discrete period of time to achieve a defined goal. At the end of the project the team is disbanded. Project teams are often matrix in nature, staffed by members taken from diverse functional teams in order to achieve the project goal. When the Project Manager has a high degree of authority this is known as a strong matrix; when Functional Managers have stronger authority this is known as a weak matrix.

Transition Coaching

In all organizational structures, there are many 'teams within teams'. For example, if I am the Manager, I might have several teams within my overall team:

Team Building and Development in a Matrix Environment

- Me and the whole team
- Me and each individual in my management team
- Me and all of my management team
- Me and my peers in other departments
- Each management team individual and their direct reports

This is complicated enough if the structure is a well-defined functional hierarchy. However, a matrix environment for completing projects adds in another layer of complexity. The functional 'teams within teams' still exist and each person has a functional 'home' team, but now they also belong to a 'project' team which has a finite life span.

All of these teams need nurturing if a project is to be successful. In a matrix environment, allegiance to the project is not created by the structure itself, but rather as a result of the relationships that are developed within the project team. Relationships in all teams are important for success, but on matrix teams, particularly weak matrix teams, where the project manager may have little authority, they are especially important. On such teams, relationships are more difficult to establish, are more fragile, and can be more easily destroyed. Keeping a diverse group of people together in a matrix team depends on building loyalty and trust.

Phases of Team Development

In 1965 Bruce Tuckerman developed the theory that a team went through certain phases of group development: forming, storming, norming and performing. The phases can be summarized as follows:

- Forming - the team comes together, starts to understand the goals and boundaries, initiates the tasks, but each individual is still working somewhat independently. Managers need to be directive at this stage in order to steer the team toward the goal.
- Storming - ideas and approaches start to be exchanged about how the work can be accomplished, and this can result in conflict. This phase is critical for the growth of the team, and results in individuals learning ways to work together. Managers still need to be directive at this stage, and also accessible to ensure that conflict is resolved and the team is starting to move forward toward the goal.
- Norming - the team starts to feel a sense of achievement, rules of operation (either formal or informal) are working, and trust begins to form. Managers start to be participative, and need to be available to provide guidance as the team continues to grow together.
- Performing - the team is now maturing and often high performing. Work is accomplished, team members know how to work together, and even though conflict takes place it is managed and navigated with skill and can enhance productivity. The team requires very little supervision at this point and can largely make its own decisions.

Tuckerman later added a final phase 'adjourning' to acknowledge that teams, in particular project teams, typically break up after the objectives of the project are complete.

Team Building Techniques

Team building activities are conducted in order to develop loyalty and trust which are a critical foundation for getting the most effective results from a matrix project team. Team building is not just about creating 'fun' events, although that is part of it. It is also not just about understanding team members through personality assessments, although again, that is part of it. The most effective team building involves combining a variety of tools and techniques.

- Kick off meetings - a new project should be initiated with a kick off meeting so that the purpose of the project, roles and responsibilities and how the project fits into the organization's overall goals can be understood. This technique can be used in all types of teams, but in a matrix project team that has come together with staff from multiple different sources it is especially important as the team has no established context for the project.

- Team agreements - Teams that know how to work together are more likely to be effective and efficient. Establishing agreements can assist in this process. Collaboratively establishing ground rules for how a team will operate will provide the team with clarity and will ease communication over issues such as boundaries, responsibilities, and team member behavior. Functional teams already have this established through the use of departmental policies and procedures. However for newly formed matrix project teams that do not have rules of operation established as part of their formal organization structure, team agreements is a necessary aspect of building an effective team.

- Delivery process definition - Understanding how the work is to be accomplished makes it easier for a team to work together. Functional teams typically have the process for delivering the work established as part of the departmental rules. Given that the nature of each project may be different, matrix project teams typically do not have initial stated rules for delivering the work. For example, if a software development team is unsure which development lifecycle (waterfall, agile, etc) is being followed to achieve the project goal, confusion and a lack of productivity by the team may result. Clearly defining and establishing a process that is understood by all the players in the newly formed matrix team is critical for the success of the project.

- Conflict management- A skillful Manager will understand that conflict happens on any team and will take the initiative to establish a clear process for managing it. This provides clarity to the team in the event that conflict does occur. A newly created matrix project team will find this especially helpful as the team is not used to working together and will need to navigate this as part of the process of maturing as a team. This will also help the team move more quickly through the 'storming' phase of group development.

- Personality assessments - An effective way to understand the other members of a newly formed matrix project team is through team building sessions using personality assessments. These can be simple and quick assessments, such as the Personality Profile: The Shapes Test, or more complex assessments which include Strengthsfinder, Myers Briggs Type Indicator, FIRO-B, Kiersey Temperament Sorter, etc. Regardless of the specific assessment conducted, the results can bring a team significant value in determining how team members can be best utilized, how the project manager can best communicate with specific team members to get the best outcomes, and how people like to be managed to make them efficient and productive. For matrix project teams, personality assessments can help shorten the process by which the team matures and learns to work together to get the results needed by the project.

- Team building events - Group events encourage positive team dynamics to develop and mature. In matrix environments, the development of loyalty and trust is critical to the stability and effectiveness of the matrix structure. Engaging people in activities outside the project allows them to get to know each other in a more relaxed setting and is quite effective in building team esprit de corps. In addition, this allows people to find ways to work together in a non-stressful environment that can then be carried back to the workplace. Some options are:
- Social events - participating in a social activity can create a team spirit that encourages people to support each other when they are at work
- Team building 'games' - building or creating something outside of the project may engender a camaraderie that can then be carried back to the working day
- End of project celebration - to acknowledge the success of the project meeting the goal

- Executive Coaching - Individual and group coaching can be an effective tool in all types of organizational structures. Executive Coaches can facilitate team development, as well as individual leadership development, by focusing on areas such as collaboration skills, negotiation skills, addressing personal or group blind spots, and improving communication. For matrix project teams, Executive Coaches can assist in team building events, as well as facilitate personality assessments, and help the group understand its own dynamics and assist the team in becoming more effective. Executive Coaches can also help teams and individuals navigate conflict in an emotionally healthy way that allows the team to move quickly through the 'storming' phase of a project and onto the next phases, thus becoming more productive more quickly.

- Regular status updates - There are a variety of ways that status can be gathered and communicated. This is a natural activity in a functional team, as members are typically used to an established status reporting routine and may be more clear on their role in that structure. For newly formed matrix project teams it is important that team members feel that they belong to the team, and can see how their progress affects the overall progress toward the goal. Examples:
- Weekly status meetings
- One on one sessions
- Project dashboards
- Project status reports

- Clear Task Assignment - Assigning work that is relevant, achievable and appropriately challenging for the individual is important in all types of teams. In newly formed matrix project teams it is especially important to make this clear, as clarity is not necessarily provided by the structure itself, as it is in functional teams. Defining tasks clearly and explaining how team members' roles in completing project tasks contributes to the success of the project, especially in the early stages of team development, is critical to the effectiveness and productivity of the team.

- Recognition and rewards - its is always important to recognize people that either go above and beyond, and in matrix project teams this can feel especially rewarding for the team members, if it has taken both the individuals and the team itself some considerable work to get to the point of operating smoothly together to achieve project goals. This can be in the form of a simple thank you, certificates, bonuses, gift cards, etc.

The techniques described can be used in any type of organizational structure, but are especially important for building loyalty and productivity in matrix teams. In a functional environment a level of allegiance is created by virtue of the structure itself, as there is only one focus for a team member's loyalty. In a matrix environment a team member has multiple loyalties and may be more loyal to his or her home team than the project team. In addition, projects often have aggressive deadlines and so it is critical that project teams become efficient, effective, and productive as quickly as possible.

The techniques described above can be mapped to Tuckerman's phases, as described below.

Forming:
- Kick off meetings
- Establish team agreement
- Personality assessments
- Goal Definition
- Clear task assignment
Storming:
- Delivery process definition
- Develop Conflict Management approach
- Executive Coaching
- Goal Reinforcement
- Clear task assignment
- Regular Status Updates
Norming
- Goal Reinforcement
- Executive Coaching
- Team building events
- Clear task assignment
- Regular Status Updates
Performing
- Regular Status Updates
- Recognition and Rewards
Adjourning
- Plan project celebration/social event
- Conduct lessons learned/post project review

Summary

In summary, team structures, even in well ordered functionally structured organizations, are inherently complex. Today's matrixed organizations make that complexity even greater. Matrix project team members have multiple loyalties and if the team is not cohesive, these divided loyalties can be harmful to the success of the project. There is a variety of team building techniques that can be undertaken to help make teams in matrixed environments more cohesive and successful. Seasoned and successful managers and leaders will continually analyze the team, determine which of Tuckerman's phases the team is in, as well as the needs of individuals, so that effective team building techniques can be employed appropriately.

Staff Development - How to Coach Your Employees for Success

Is Coaching the New Management?

World-class athletes, public performers, indeed winners in nearly every profession, know that without the right coach, they won't perform at their peak.

Transition Coaching

Executive and management coaching has increased in popularity in the business world, with many prestigious companies implementing coaching programs for their executives, managers, and employees. Since high performance is essential to the maintenance of a successful career, companies who want to maximize the investment they make in people are choosing to engage in performance coaching.

Staff Development - How to Coach Your Employees for Success

"A 2004 survey by Right Management Consultants [found], 86 percent of companies said they used coaching to sharpen the skills of individuals who have been identified as future organizational leaders." (P. Michelman, Harvard Management Update, 2004)

How Do Managers Start Coaching?

Due to the success of executive coaching, many managers are now coaching employees for Performance Improvement (PI). Coaching can also be a very effective tool for motivation, participation, and leadership development. So, how can you use coaching for PI, staff development, and ultimate organizational success?

Know Your Role:

When engaging in coaching employees it is important to understand and clarify your role. Although there are many similarities, a boss, a coach, and a boss coaching employees have different roles:

The Boss = Sponsor-Mandates goals and holds others accountable for results (internal to organization)

The Coach = Change Agent-Helps people increase their skills to achieve the results (typically external to organization).

The Boss-Coach = Both Mandates the goals and acts as change agent to help people develop the ability to accomplish these goals (internal to organization)

Common Pitfalls of the Boss-Coach:

Beware some of the common pitfalls of the dual Boss-Coach role such as:

Not making expectations clear Pretending not to have expectations Soft pedaling bottom line expectations Thinking that coaching is a substitute for performance management Thinking coaching is being directive or telling employees what to do
Two Important Tasks When Coaching:

According to Mary Beth O'Neil, author of Executive Coaching With Backbone and Heart, there are separate and sequential tasks a boss-coach needs to accomplish with any employee:

Task 1: Name performance expectations and ensure employee commitment to them.

Clear expectations should be behaviorally specific i.e. what, by whom, when.

Task 2: Coach and develop employees to accomplish expectations. Once you have clarified expectations offer coaching as a way to accomplish these expectations. Offering coaching as an option puts the employee's motivation where it belongs, with her.

Steps to Coaching Employees for Success:

Once an employee commits to coaching the boss-coach engages in the following steps:

1. Contracting.

2. Action Planning

3. Live-Action Coaching

4. Debriefing-Evaluation of coaching process

Step I-Contracting:

Partner with the coachee, familiarize yourself with her challenges, test coachee's ability to own her part of the issue and start giving immediate feedback. Establish a contract that outlines specific content, duration of coaching, sequence of meetings, goals, and how they will be measured. Specify expectations of both parties i.e. reporting hierarchies.

Step II-Action Planning:

During this phase move the coachee to specifics. Help her identify her side of the pattern and steps that she needs to take to improve her performance. Once a contract has been established plan specifically how it will be executed. With the employee, create specific action items with due dates.

Step III- Coaching Sessions:

Meet with the coachee on a regular basis (once a week is recommended) to ensure that the plan is being followed and to help keep the employee on track. I recommend Live-Action Coaching*, which allows you to observe a coachee in live action with her colleagues and provide immediate feedback.

As a manager you possess a unique advantage because you are already internal and in a position to observe. Live action coaching may also entail giving an employee feedback on an interaction you are having with them. Assume that how they interact with you carries over to other working relationships so who better to give them feedback than someone who is being affected by his or her behavior.

When engaging in Live-Action coaching ensure the structure of the sessions, follow the coachee's goals, foster pattern breaking, and maintain alignment in the organizational system-by honoring the coachee's and your role in the system.

Step IV-Debriefing:

After the agreed upon coaching contract has been fulfilled you must debrief with your employee regarding the process of coaching. Assess whether or not coaching was effective, were her goals met? Discuss the coachee's strengths and challenges. Identify key recurring patterns, assess the alignment of roles, and plan the coachee's next steps. Set a tone of openness by being open to feedback on your performance first.

When coaching employees keep in mind some of the characteristics that make good coaching so effective:

Involves personal, one-on-one training or teaching Usually results from direct observation of behavior or specific facts Can be targeted to a specific task or assignment Is interactive Suggests a concerned, friendly, caring interest Offers encouragement and support Doesn't rush to judgment or criticism

If you clarify your role, avoid the pitfalls of having a dual role, and follow these simple guidelines you will be on the road to successful employee coaching.

* For a more in depth discussion of Live-Action Coaching you may want to pick up Executive Coaching With Backbone and Heart (M. O'Neal, 2000).

_________________________________________________

Alfred North Whitehead wrote that "the art of progress is to preserve order amidst change and to preserve change amidst order."

1. A Basic Human Need

Change is a fact of life! The only thing that doesn't change is change. Consequently, it is also a fact of life that human beings are always dealing with change in some form at every stage of their lives. Change, in fact, is a basic human need. Change is really nothing more than movement from one state of being to another. Without movement - physical, physiological, biological, mental, spiritual, emotional - human beings would simply stop functioning and human existence, as we experience it, would cease. Change is the natural means to both improvement and deterioration. To a large extent, human beings have a choice in what the results of change will be.

2. There are two kinds of change:

Natural Change: change that occurs without cognitive human intervention and that takes place in a natural way, such as weather and the changing of the seasons.

Designed Change: change that occurs as a result of cognitive human intervention and that takes place as a result of changing the environment to reflect human thought; this kind of change is governed by human intention and perceived need rather than by natural conditions.

The human experience of change is exactly the same in both natural and designed change. The reason is that all change in the environment provokes the same kinds of emotions about one's ability to adapt to and survive in the altered conditions. The initial human reaction to change is fear - fear of loss of something and the fear that what is lost will not be replaced by something of a greater value that will increase predictability and sustain life.

3. How to Take Charge of Change

Regardless of the type of change that occurs, there exists a basic human need to experience the change process as being well-ordered and safe rather than chaotic and dangerous. Without this experience of ordered and safe change before, during and after any transition the human element of the organization cannot fully participate in productive contribution to positive change. It is imperative to identify and remove existing and potential risks that can inhibit the successful execution of any strategic change initiative.

Like it or not, change happens continually in your life and in your organization. As Whitehead's comment indicates, the only way to make change work in your favor is to take charge of the change process. When you do this, you use the change process as a means to design the future you intend rather than passively allow the changing environment to present you with limited options and narrowed choices for meaningful action.

How can you "take charge of change" so as to make it happen in your favor and to make it "ordered?" There are several points to be considered in answering this question:

- Change is conceived as an event (something which happens at a particular moment in time and at a specific place or places).

- Change is experienced as a process; this process is called "transition."

- Because transition is a process, it can be managed.

How well the transition is managed will determine if change is remembered as a positive or negative experience. The remembrance of previous changes is the basis of motivation for or the resistance against future changes. Assessing the level of "change readiness" is a critical first step in determining the level of support and interest in changing from the current state of affairs. How has change been experienced in the past by those who will be responsible for and who will be affected by changes in the present? The answer to this question will help you determine if some "pre-work" on "stage-setting" is needed to prepare the organization for a successful transition. This step is a part of an overall "Transition Risk Analysis" that will help you determine what the transition facilitators and inhibitors are within your organization.

Effective change implementation management skills are necessary for all managers in any organization. These skills are essential to the strategic achievement of an organization's mission and goals. These skills can be learned and continually refined. The better these skills are learned, refined and implemented on a proactive basis, the more the process of change becomes a competitive advantage for the organization.

4. The Three Phases of Change

There are three phases of change:

- Letting Go

- Transition

- New Beginning

Change for the better always involves these three stages. If they are not gone through in succession, the resulting change will not be for the better. Focusing on helping your organization let go of the past, transition through the change and begin together to move in a new direction is the pathway for creating improvement, increased productivity and job satisfaction. This is the journey of change. In short, the process of transitioning needs to be seen as a strategic element of the organization's development and growth.

5. Transition and Organizational Progress

What Do I Mean by "Transition?"

Transition is: "The process through which an existing circumstance, condition or relationship (real or imagined) is acted on in a manner that produces a new and different circumstance, condition or relationship."

What Do I Mean by "Progress?"

Progress is achieved when the "new and different circumstance, condition and/or relationship" is better able to help the individual or organization realize their personal and/or corporate vision and mission. An individual or organization progresses by effectively managing the process of transitioning from one state of existence to a more desirable one.

An organization progresses by taking charge of the changes it undergoes by effectively managing the process of transitioning from one state of existence to a more desirable one. Progress is achieved when the "new and different circumstance, condition and/or relationship" is better able to help the organization realize it purpose and mission.

If an organization does not take charge of the changes it undergoes by effectively managing the process of transitioning, then the changes it experiences will soon sweep it into dangerous and destructive currents.

6. Transition and Enterprise Integration

The Three Areas of Organizational Structure:

- People

- Systems

- Environment

Any enterprise is composed of people, systems and the environment in which work is done. When change is initiated it often occurs in only one of these three areas of the organization. Any attempted change that doesn't involve all three areas of organizational structure will result in outcomes worse than the present.

It is true that people make or break the organizations for which they work. It is also true that people and their performance impact and are impacted by the following four components of organizational structure:

- the organization's principles and policies

- the organization's mission, strategies and planning

- the organization's arrangement, operations and administration

- workplace space, processes, procedures and arrangement of equipment

The above model demonstrates the interrelationship of the aspects of any enterprise. When there is a change in one area, all other areas are affected in some way. If one area needs change in order to be more viable and productive, the other parts must be involved in the change. If they aren't, if change occurs at all, it will not be for the better in the long run.

When planning any transition, honor the interconnectedness of your organization by actively and creatively involving all these areas and components of your enterprise. Don't segment the enterprise into separate entities and focus on only one to the exclusion of the others. Any organizational transition should be preceded by the creation of a "Strategic Plan and Implementation Blueprint" that serves as the marching orders for the entire enterprise and that keeps everything integrated, on track, within budget, on time and with minimum resistance from and disruption to the operating environment.

7. The Strategic Plan and Implementation Blueprint: No Doubt Contracting

A vital part of any "Strategic Plan and Implementation Blueprint" for the transition process is what I call "No Doubt Contracting." This is an unambiguous document that clearly describes what is involved, who is involved, responsibilities and accountabilities and what the outcomes will be for the organization, its employees, customers and the community in which it does business. If change is to be directed toward a better future for all involved, there will need to be a clear vision of the destination, how to get there and what is needed by whom to make it happen. When all parties contract with one another, then all have buy-in not just to the creation of the contract but, more importantly, to the results the contract is designed to help accomplish.

While pursuing a planned transition, it will be wise for the leaders of such an undertaking to remind themselves constantly of the words of Machiavelli: "There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things, because the innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new."

Change, Transition, and Organizational Progress: What Does It All Mean?

Leadership Through Effective Interpersonal Communication Skills

Too often I see leaders who either don't communicate; over communicate; communicate inappropriately through outbursts, anger, or blaming; or don't communicate clearly.

Communicating effectively through strong interpersonal communication is the most critical skill a leader can possess when working with others and it continues to be of great importance to meet the demands of employee retention and in the building of trust and confidence in an individual's and organization's leadership.

Transition Coaching

Many leaders miss the mark when it comes to connecting with their followers due to a lack of interest in others ideas and opinions, out dated management styles, and the inability to work with others. The ability to listen, read body language, ask questions, provide feedback and generate effective two-way communication builds trust & can also prevent performance problems/challenges down the road. Great leaders consistently strive to strengthen their interpersonal communication competencies by building and maintaining open, supportive, and collaborative relationships with others in the organization.

Leadership Through Effective Interpersonal Communication Skills

So what are Interpersonal Communication Skills?

Interpersonal communication is the process of developing a unique relationship with the other person by interacting and simultaneously sharing influence. It involves using communication skills effectively. As well as using skills such as active listening and tone of voice, they include delegation and leadership. It is how well you communicate with someone.

Having good interpersonal communication skill is a combination of being able to say what you mean clearly and concisely, and being able to take on board opinions of others and adapt what you say accordingly, as well as making them feel they can speak freely. To do that, you've got to be aware of your own role in the conversation and be able to manage your own attitudes and emotions (emotional intelligence). People with good interpersonal skills can generally control the feelings that emerge in difficult situations and respond appropriately, instead of being overwhelmed by emotion, and therefore the number of conflicts is reduced.

Working to strengthen your interpersonal communication skills will enhance your ability as a leader to articulate the vision of your organization. It will ultimately strengthen and add value to the individual, team and organization at all levels.

Start enhancing your Interpersonal Communication Skills today.

Professional Presentations

You have been asked to do a presentation. You have plenty of time to prepare. So where do you start, how do you make it interesting and yourself confident enough to pull it off with style?

The first thing to give some thought to is the topic (if you have one). The time limit you have been given to present in and the props or tools you are to use. I would then mull it over for at least twenty-four hours and make notes of anything that comes to mind. That will give you the ideas for your outline.

Transition Coaching

Less is definitely more when doing a presentation. It is better to articulate a few key points and leave your audience fully understanding the message you gave them than it is to blind them with facts and figures, leaving them overwhelmed and generally confused by the time you have finished. We have all heard of and experienced what I call 'death by PowerPoint'!

Professional Presentations

If you have been asked to compile your presentation electronically then one slide per three or four minutes of time, plus a title and contact slide, is going to be plenty. Keep the content on the slides brief. Slides should look clean, tidy and well laid out. Looking at them should tell you something without any kind of verbal addition. However, what you talk about should be the subject of the slide and not the content. Almost everyone you present to can read the slide for themselves; therefore your words should be in-depth and the slide should be a bullet-pointed or pictorial summary. For example, if you are talking about European buying trends over the past five years, you could talk about motivations and factors, whilst your slide could show a graph. Whatever the subject make sure your facts are accurate. Research everything twice and cross reference different sources of expertise. If you find conflicting numbers or details you can say; The Times state a, b and c whilst Reuters list the figures as x, y and z.

When you have all the content prepared practice at least twice. Run through the entire thing from start to finish out loud. If you can find someone to listen great, if not do it anyway. This will give you an idea on timing, make you confident of the intonation and highlight any areas that would benefit from a little polish.

Decide what you want to do about handouts. Do you want to give them at the beginning (which means people will have flicked through them before you start), at the end as a reminder or do you want to email them after the event? If you are giving them out before it is a good idea to include some blank spaces for people to write notes. Find out how many people you are presenting to and make sure you have enough copies printed (always a good idea to have some extra just in case). If this is an interview presentation you might want to bind the sheets so they look more professional. If you are emailing make sure you have a current address for each attendee.

Are you going to use any props? Visual aids can add interest but they need to be relevant. If you are talking about a product you could pass some samples around the room but be prepared for people to whisper and take their eyes off the presentation whilst this is happening. If you are presenting on using something, like  a piece of exercise equipment, a prop might make it easier for your audience to understand - think Dragon's Den!

Don't forget your personal presentation; how are you going to look? Clean, tidy and smart are definites but also think comfort with regards to shoes and perhaps wear layers so you can adjust how much you wear at the time dependent on the temperature of the room.

Arrive early, take some time to relax, breath, set a positive intention, breath again... and present.
