I think I definitely needed to round the horse over his back more, as he wasn't quite through to my hands. Again, now that I have ridden him for quite some time now, I know it is vital to have a very clear seat aid for this transition. Almost like you count off 1, 2, 3, STOP! with an increased amount of tightening in the core each time.

I Want a Divorce But My Spouse Doesn't Want One

Divorce is a difficult transition for most. When you add an unrelenting spouse who insists on contesting the divorce and opposes your decision to be free, the difficulty and pain is tripled. Not only do you have to deal with your own sense of loss, failure and recovery but you've got to move forward with a legal process that has turned your one time lover and best friend into your mortal enemy. It seems like a lose-lose situation.

Here are three things you can do to clear the tension and make this a Win-Win experience for all involved:

Transition Coaching

#1- As painful and burdensome as it may feel to do, make time for your soon-to-be-ex spouse. From where you stand, the divorce has been a long time coming. Your announcement of it, to you, was just writing on the wall. However, in most cases, that's hardly the truth for your partner.

I Want a Divorce But My Spouse Doesn't Want One

Yes, he or she had a feeling some years back that things were going downhill. Yes, he/she sensed that the distance between you was increasing. But your spouse may have considered it "growing pains." He or she may have looked at it as a mere transition. Now faced with the inevitable fact that this marriage, your marriage, is over, is a devastating blow. Although you don't feel it, the shockwaves still resound with your spouse. Honor that by making a concerted effort to spend quality alone time with your soon-to-be-ex.

Yes, this person is going to repeatedly ask you why and, yes, he or she will probably yell, cry or get angry but remember that your goal is not to defend the inevitable; it's to show your spouse that you care enough to sit down and listen to his or her side of this new chapter in both your lives. Sometimes people want you to listen; other times, they just want you to hear. In this case, your soon-to-be ex needs to be heard.

#2- Go above and beyond the call of duty to provide financially everything your soon-to-be-ex requires to maintain your family's lifestyle. One of the biggest fears, on the part of the person who didn't expect the divorce, is this: "You're going to walk out and leave me with nothing after I gave you my whole life." Can you see how devastating that fear is? Do you understand that it is that fear that will drive relatively sane people to do all sorts of insane things, all in the name of "keeping what's rightfully mine"?

When this fear is backed up with even the smallest financial withdrawal from you, it sends your soon-to-be-ex into survival mode and you become the biggest threat to his or her survival... and the biggest target. Don't set yourself up for a fall. Divide assets. Start your own personal bank account where you set aside what you need for your new life but DO NOT drain your family's budget (i.e., remove all the money from the accounts, close down credit cards) to do it. Do everything in your power to give your soon-to-be-ex everything he or she needs financially, regardless of his/her intentions to ever actually use the money (and if the person retaliates by spending too much, call your credit card company or bank and file misuse of funds- you'll get the money back). The point is to show good faith so that a level of respect and integrity can be maintained throughout the divorce process.

#3- Move out. It sounds simple but so many divorces in process today are occurring with both people living under the same roof. It's a neverending warzone filled with tension, anger and blame. You feel it, your spouse feels it and, most importantly, your children feel it. Staying in the family home (as much as you want to fight for what's rightfully yours) is not the way to go if your goal is to have a smooth, relatively quick divorce. Living together does one of two things: 1) encourages the hopes of your spouse that, by some miracle, you'll get back together or 2) increases the amount of ill will and resentment your spouse feels for you and the life he or she believes you are working so hard to destroy.

Remember: hurting people hurt people. Two hurting people do not need to be under the same roof.

This is a touchy situation. You need compassion at a level that you've never known. This is not a time to retaliate or treat your spouse like the enemy. He or she might choose that route. If you want to come out of this stronger and with more peace of mind, take the higher road.

Logistics At Wal-Mart

Many people wonder how Wal-Mart is able to charge such low prices and continue to make a profit. There are several factors in their business model that contribute to this ability, but a big one is their ability to adapt to an ever-changing global marketplace. Some criticize Wal-Mart's efforts to deliver to their customers a quality product at low prices, but in reality, Wal-Mart has been able to deliver low prices by being efficient. This efficiency is present in several areas but one of the most important places is how they are able to manufacture products all over the world and get them to retail outlets, which are also all over the world. This ability requires a flawless logistical system that allows product to be shipped anywhere at a moments notice.

One of the keys to Wal-Mart's effective logistical system is the flexibility that it has when choosing suppliers. When Wal-Mart negotiates with suppliers and the suppliers know that Wal-Mart will only pay the most competitive prices. This is because it is very easy for them to find another supplier of that particular material with a lower price and very few logistical problems. This gives Wal-Mart a huge amount of leverage when dealing with suppliers. If a particular supplier knows that a company has found a lower price, it will lower its price accordingly. However, if the supplier also knows that it will be incredibly difficult for the company to make the proper adjustments to ensure a smooth transition to a different supplier, then they will be less inclined to lower their price as much. This is not how existing suppliers deal with Wal-Mart; when they see that Wal-Mart has found a supplier that will give them a lower price, the current suppliers lower their prices accordingly. They know that Wal-Mart's logistical system can handle transition seamlessly and therefore they gain no additional leverage since it won't be difficult or costly for Wal-Mart to choose another supplier.

Transition Coaching

Another reason that Wal-Mart's prices are so competitive is because they buy in such large quantities that transportation from one end of the supply chain to another is not as costly for additional units. This aspect of the logistical system does not come from skill or expertise it simply comes from the sheer size of the company, but this is still a factor. Wal-Mart buys so many supplies from different places throughout the world, that they have the luxury of using bigger trucks and using less fuel to go back and forth. Also if by chance they have to use shipping services to transport material from one location to another, Wal-Mart will give them so much business that they will get huge discounts.

The logistical system that Wal-Mart uses is so effective because it is so flexible. This is why Wal-Mart is able to offer things much cheaper than other companies can. Wal-Mart has a reputation for being able to offer these things in a cheap manner because of low employee pay and human rights violations but this is simply not the case.

Five Basic Principles for Getting the Most Out of Basketball Drills

If you intend to be an effective coach, you will need to run organized and strategic practices.

Having a plan for your practice is important - and that plan will obviously include LOTS of basketball drills. But just penciling them in won't be enough...

Transition Coaching

Take the following five principles into consideration as you chose and implement your basketball drills to ensure that you're not just working hard, but that you're also working SMART!

Five Basic Principles for Getting the Most Out of Basketball Drills

1) Choose basketball drills that address the real needs of your team. Running drills that are too advanced for the skill level of your team will frustrate your players, and running drills that are too simple for the skill level of your team will bore them. Study your players carefully, and then decide which skills need the most attention. Then find drills that provide repetition in those skills. For example, if you notice that many of your players don't know how to pivot effectively, find drills that provide focused repetition on pivoting. At first, you should use drills that allow the players to perform pivots without any defensive pressure. Once they master the form, then find drills that add defensive pressure. If you jump to defensive pressure drills without first drilling your players on basic form, they will struggle with the skill.

2) Run your basketball drills with intensity. If you don't demonstrate your belief in the value of the drill, your players will notice and will not be motivated to focus and exert. Insist on focus and intensity and give appropriate feedback constantly. Encouraging words are infectious! Transition from drill to drill quickly and smoothly within a practice. Again, planning is essential so that your practice is intense rather than frantic or lackadaisical.

3) Use basketball drills that minimize inactivity. Practice time is valuable, and there is no reason to use drills that have eight players standing in line while two players are doing something. Do your best to keep your players engaged and active most of the time. Split your players up into smaller groups and utilize all the practice locations available to help with this.

4) Set performance goals for your basketball drills. Provide your players with a performance incentive for some of your drills. For instance, if you're doing a full-court passing and lay-in drill, you could establish some standards for successful repetitions and then reward the team with a treat for meeting a stated number of successful repetitions without a mistake. This kind of set-up builds in some fun and focus to practice routines.

5) Vary the basketball drills that you use. Nothing is more deadly than overdoing a drill. One way to keep things fresh is to have some options. Many drills address the same skill, and changing the format up slightly helps keep players from tuning out. With so many good options readily available, it is really quite easy to find enough good drills to keep your practices interesting without sacrificing your developmental goals. Keep an organized drill file and review it often.

Five Steps to Effectively Managing Organizational Change

An organization is, quite simply, any group of individuals who come together to try to achieve mutual goals by means of a division of labor. This is done by means of setting goals that will further the organization's growth and viability within the existing social and economic milieu as well as developing agreements among the people comprising the organization as to who will do what and when and under whose supervision and guidance.

When contemplating changing anything about these arrangements, it is well to be advised to start at the beginning of why and how this existing arrangement came to be and why it exists at the current time. After all, what has come to be accepted and observed as the standard operating procedures of an organization came about for good reasons and have been effective at achieving beneficial results for a period of time (perhaps a very long period of time). Altering an accepted, comfortable and heretofore useful way of doing things is challenging. The initial challenge that presents itself is fully comprehending and appreciating the foundational narrative of the organization and the collective experiences that members have shared since its inception. In other words, what of its past makes the organization tick today?

Transition Coaching

After coming to a thorough understanding of what makes the current organization tick, there are five steps that need to be taken sequentially in order to effect effective change.

Five Steps to Effectively Managing Organizational Change

1. The first step to take in initiating change within any type of organization is to create acute awareness of how things are now and how this state of affairs falls short of accomplishing stated goals and objectives. This can be done by disseminating occasional "state of the organization" reports as well as holding brief, but frequent, "progress report" meetings within each department and/or subgroup.

2. The second step is to nurture understanding that something must be done to change the current situation. Solicitation of input from coworkers regarding what can be done to change things follows logically from the understanding that something should be done. "Input equals buy-in" and those who contribute their ideas on how their organization should change have a strong investment in making that change happen.

3. Next, although people may provide suggestions as to how to change, unless there is a sense of urgency to do so, change will be perceived merely as a concept rather than a process that needs to be started immediately. Once change is understood as needing to be accomplished, a positive perception of what it will look like, both in terms of the transition process and the "finished product," needs to be fostered and fed by constant communication about the shared vision of the future and the specific ways everyone will individually benefit in that new reality.

4. On the way to making the changed environment and operating procedures "stick" and stay feasible throughout the organization, there needs to be a well-thought-out program to ensure the actual adoption of the changes in the way things are done. Rewarding those who perform in the new ways and telling the stories of how their results better meet the current needs and accomplish the goals of the organization will go a long way to moving all members toward behaving in the "new and better" way.

5. Once adopted as "the way things are done around here" change can be seen as having been institutionalized within the organization and established as the new standard for performance and measurement of success, recognition and reward. Continue to solicit feedback on the new ways and request still other ways members can improve their respective job tasks to achieve even greater levels of efficiency. The idea is to leverage the experience and ideas of those who do the job to improve the job on a continuous basis. Institutionalizing new and improved ways of doing things in an organization is an ongoing process. In other words, managing organizational change means to continually insist on change for the better.

Knowing the roots of the organization, where and when it arose and how it's progressed over time, and then engaging in the five steps to initiating and managing organizational change, you will successfully guide your organization through its transition from where it is now to where it needs to be for greater effectiveness and better results.

Leadership Qualities - The Defining Qualities of Effective Leadership

Leadership qualities are qualities that characterize effective leadership. What are these qualities?
Let me lay it out clearly.
For starters, effective leaders are . . .
1. Humble
2. Decisive
3. Selfless and self sacrificing
4. Empathetic
5. Disciplined
6. Good communicators (they communicate the agenda clearly and effectively)
7. Fair and unprejudiced
Effective leaders . . .
8. Maximize the potential of their people by empowering them
9. Surround themselves with people smarter than they are
10. Do not care who takes the credit
11. Admit that they are infallible and admit mistakes when they make them
12. Have a burning desire to make a difference . . . a positive difference
This list is by no means exhaustive. In fact, I can go on and on.
But no matter how long the list of leadership qualities is, I can tell you honestly that without three of these leadership qualities you will inevitably fail as a leader.

What are these four uncompromising qualities of effective leadership?
1. Surround yourself with people smarter than you
2. Acknowledge mistakes when you make them. Take corrective actions, learn from them, and move on
3. Maximize the potential of your people and
4. Be selfless. Serve your people and your organization. Abhor personal gain.
The desire for personal gain will colour your judgment and will ultimately lead you to the path of failure.
To illustrate, consider what happened recently in the company where I work.
As I write this, I work for a global beverage company with roots in the UK. I am in one of the offices in West Africa. My company's cocoa based beverage drink has about 50% share of the country's total cocoa based beverage market. Clearly, it was a big operation. Some two years back, my company's CEO and the finance director were fired. Why? Over statement of company accounts. The company wasn't doing well. Instead of telling his bosses so, the CEO . . . with the collaboration of the finance director . . . tempered with the accounts to make the company look good and thus, retain his position as CEO. This situation went on for about three successive years before external auditors contracted by the parent company in the Uk detected the fraud. That incident resulted in a loss to the company of over 6 million U.S. dollars. And shareholders have been told they should not expect dividends for the next two years. The CEO was a young talented fellow who had been CEO of the company for over 10 years. He was well respected in the community, even winning the position of "The Most Respected CEO" in my country twice.

Transition Coaching

So, what went wrong? What took him down?
1. The desire for greater prominence, greater fame, and personal gain.
2. Arrogance. He refused to admit he was wrong and wind down production to match demand and market opportunities (He had a vision to make the company a billion dollar company by year 2010. He called this . . . project marathon).
When the market wasn't growing as fast as production was growing, he refused to slow down production. The factories kept on producing at break-neck speed and the company kept on acquiring more warehouses to store what was produced that the market could not accommodate)
3. He surrounded himself with 'yes men' - directors who were at his mercy . . . directors who stood by and watched while the life investment of shareholders went down the drain
Make no mistake about it.

Leadership Qualities - The Defining Qualities of Effective Leadership

No matter how good you currently are, no matter how intelligent you may be, no matter how many awards you have won, you will fail eventually if you are not a selfless leader.
Remember all the leadership qualities discussed above. But whatever you do, do not forget the four most important leadership qualities.
You can be a great leader. Effective leadership is within your reach. It starts by understanding leadership qualities you need essential for effective leadership.
The good news is . . . these attributes can be learned. And . . . this is your big chance.

Pistons president Joe Dumars is scheduled to have his first face-to-face meeting with Avery Johnson later this weekend regarding Detroit's coaching vacancy, according to NBA coaching sources. Sources told ESPN.com that Dumars and Johnson, after discussing the job by phone, have planned to meet Sunday at Johnson's home in the Houston area, with Dumars intent on trying to hire his next coach before the Pistons begin summer-league play next week in Las Vegas. After former-Pistons coach Doug Collins pulled out of consideration earlier this week, ESPN analyst Johnson was widely regarded as the leading candidate for the position, which was vacated by Tuesday's firing of Michael Curry. Dumars, though, told the Detroit News that it is "not a given" that Johnson will be hired as Curry's replacement, with sources telling ESPN.com that Dumars has added Boston Celtics associate head coach Tom Thibodeau to an original list of candidates that featured Collins, Johnson and Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester. Kuester and Thibodeau have no head-coaching experience in the NBA, which appeared to clash with Dumars' recent declaration that he thinks it is "best to move forward with a more experienced coach." Teams are popular in many business organizations and have proven successful in improving process and cutting costs. How to Create a Personal Leadership Development Plan

Many people think that management and leadership go hand in hand automatically. But just because you are a manager does not mean that you are a leader. Many management techniques are being thrown out the window in favor of leadership skills. But making the transition between manager and leader can be difficult for some. The best way to become an effective leader is by creating a personal leadership development plan.

The first thing that you need to do to create a personal leadership development plan is to understand the difference between management and leadership. While some do not see the difference, others cannot explain it. Quite simply, management is something that you do. It is a career. Leadership is having strength and courage in your convictions, and the ability to see those convictions manifest in reality.

Transition Coaching

So what are your convictions? You may think that you know what you believe in, but it is important to take a step back and actually list your beliefs and values. There are many assessments available that can help you do this. This important step in creating a personal leadership development plan will likely teach you things about yourself that you yourself did not realize were true. It may seem like a waste of time, but until you know what your convictions are, you cannot manifest them in reality through effective leadership.

How to Create a Personal Leadership Development Plan

Once you have a clear understanding of your convictions, you need to apply them to your organization. Do not look at numbers and people. Look at the overall purpose and mission of the company. Then, narrow your view to your team, and finally yourself. If you do not see your values and beliefs reflected in your actions, the actions of your team, and the actions of the company, then your work is cut out for you.

When creating your personal leadership development plan, first outline your beliefs, ethics, and values. Then, outline the ways that those beliefs, ethics, and values show in your actions within the organization. Are there ways that you need to improve? What support does your team need to obtain personal and organizational success that you have failed to give them? After all, their success is your success. Write down all of your thoughts and ideas for manifesting your convictions in the reality of your team and organization. This is the bare bones of your personal leadership development plan.

Next, do your homework. Talk to your employees, team members, customers, and suppliers to learn what more you can do or be that will assist you in manifesting your convictions and your personal leadership development plan. Sit back and listen to the ideas and feelings of others. This is the only way that you can learn from other perspectives what is needed for organizational or team success. Until you are aware of the changes that need to be made, you will not be able to make any changes for the common good of the organization and your employees.

Remember that while you may be able to affect change in your own small part of the world, the organization as a whole may not reflect your convictions any time soon. Change within large corporations is either very slow or nonexistent. Watch for signs that your personal leadership development plan is making a difference in your immediate environment.
